Minister of Finance
Olaf Scholz was born in Osnabrück in 1958, from early childhood he grew up in Hamburg. His grandparents were railway officials, his parents were merchants in the textile industry.
Following his school education he studied law in Hamburg as part of the one-stage legal training. Since 1985 Olaf Scholz has been a partner at the Hamburger law firm “Zimmermann, Scholz und Partner”. In 1975 he joined the SPD and has since assumed numerous leading positions within the party and public offices. From 2011 to 2018 he was first mayor of Hamburg. As of march 2018, Olaf Scholz is Federal Minister of Finance and lives with his wife, politician Britta Ernst, in Potsdam.
