The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed increased fragility of Western democracies and institutions. The post-pandemic period could afford strategic and forward-looking governments an opportunity to protect democracy and strengthen our institutions through renewed promotion of multilateral cooperation, and a commitment to confronting populism and misinformation in the digital age. 

Safeguarding democratic norms and practices will generate cascading benefits across and through our other Summit themes, creating virtuous cycles of recovery: improved public health, just transitions to a greener economy, and more equitable, inclusive societies.
